i-Scholar Spotlight: Chidinma Akaihe

Name

Chidinma Akaihe

University/Country

University of Glasgow/Scotland, United Kingdom

Course of Study

MSc Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Resistance

Scholarship

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan

Why did you choose your current University/Country?

I chose the University of Glasgow because it is one of the world’s highest-ranked universities with research strengths and reputable faculty members. Nationally, it is among the top 10 universities in the UK. In addition, studying in the UK will allow me to develop advanced technical skills relevant to my course of study and establish competent researchers’ networks while broadening my knowledge about the epidemiology of infectious diseases. Also, the course structure aligned with my interests.

How has the experience been so far?

Adjusting to the new learning environment has been a daunting process. The intense coursework, coupled with assignments with imminent deadlines to meet, makes it a bit stressful.  Here, the learning culture is different. Interestingly, I have lecturers willing to render their full support until I adjust to the new system.

What have you found most interesting about your new city?

Glasgow is a cool and rainy place. The transport system is mind-blowing. It is exciting to see that people still buy goods with coins here. It is most surprising that the sun can set as early as past 4 to 5 p.m. with total darkness everywhere.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

Graduate application is like a full-time job but collaborating with others makes it less demanding. Planning applications well while taking note of deadlines is useful. To me, self-rejection is worse than getting a rejection email. If you meet the eligibility requirements, apply without being intimidated by the process. Be sure that starting a graduate study is the perfect next step for you. Above all, involve God in every step of your journey in life.

How did i-Scholar Initiative contribute to your journey?

After my National Youth Service, I was not sure of what to do next. But receiving the offer from i-Scholar Initiative brought back hope amid scholarship rejections.

Taking care of the full cost of my standardized tests (GRE & TOEFL) was a big financial relief to me. Also, i- Scholar Initiative allowed me to network with fellow scholars and receive guidance from the assigned mentors.

  1. I like this program. And I am forever grateful for sir Adeyemo who introduced it via Facebook to me.
I am a fresh graduate of microbiology waiting for my NYSC call up later which may come up the latest, March 2021.
I wish to apply for the I-scholar program this year but I don’t have half the requirements.
Still, I am very happy for the opportunity and generosity.
